Advanced electron microscopy physics

Technical University of Denmark

General course objectives:
To develop a fundamental physical understanding of electron microscopy and simulation skills to design, analyze and interpret electron microscopy of matter at the atomic level.

Learning objectives:
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
  • Describe the physics in electron scattering on matter
  • Describe the physics in electron optics, contrast transfer function and partial coherence
  • Explain resolution limits and sampling criteria
  • Explain image formation mechanisms in broad-beam and focused electron-beam modes
  • Simulate electron microscopy images created using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy modes
  • Analyze simulated electron microscopy images for atomic-resolution structural motifs
  • Explore impact of electron optics and electron-matter interactions on image formations
  • Design an electron microscopy experiment to retrieve a pre-defined atomic structure

Contents:
The course will cover electron-matter interactions, aberration-corrected electron optics, contrast transfer functions, partial coherence, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), electron exit-wave functions, image formation mechanism, electron detection and resolution limits. The topics will be introduced in lectures and explored in computer exercises based on the python-based package abTEM
