General course objectives:
Keep track of the latest development within the field.

Learning objectives:
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
  • Demonstrate ability to read, assess, and critically evaluate scientific papers in the field of fisheries biology.
  • Discuss, present, and evaluate state of the art within fisheries biology and ecology.
  • Present and give constructive feedback on other students' presentations.
  • Provide an overview of the various types of models/analysis and methods used in the field of fisheries biology and the kind of biological knowledge required to successfully implement those models.
  • Make a well structured oral presentation on a topic related to fisheries biology (incl. scientific articles and possibly relating own research to the topic).
  • Be able to organize a session on a topic related to fisheries biology (e.g. finding relevant literature, preparing and presenting, and inviting guest lecturer).
  • Discuss issues driving the front of fisheries biology research and ability to relate own research to these issues.
  • Incorporate knowledge learned from studies discussed into own research projects and presentations.

Contents:
From 9 to 10:15 two relevant papers (one selected by a course participant and one by the course responsible) will be thoroughly assessed and discussed. We will focus on the science, but also on the many different ways to structure an article and communicate the results. We will also consider difference between articles presenting mathematical models vs. articles presenting empirical observations etc. From 10:30-11:30 there will be a presentation either from an invited guest lecture (both from within the institute and from outside) or by one of the course participants. From 11.30-12:00 we will discuss/plan the content of the next session. We will focus on interactive teaching and when students present we will not only focus on the content of the presentation, but also on the feedback practice. We will dedicate one session to learning a practical skill, such as ShinyR, Github, or markdown. The course participants are expected to spend about 3 hours for preparation before each session (i.e. reading articles, preparing presentation etc.) and some extra hours when arranging a journal club session.
