MT-701 Thermodynamics and Kinetics of Materials

University of Agder

Contents

Thermodynamics and kinetics offer important tools and understanding of materials and their properties, both in equilibrium and during processing. The aim of the course is to give the students knowledge of how thermodynamic phenomena and kinetic processes can be applied to bulk and nanomaterials, as well as how it can be used to formulate and solve problems relevant to their own research. The course will review the basics of thermodynamic equilibrium, phase diagrams, reaction kinetics, heat transport and mass transport in both solids and fluids.

Learning outcomes

On completing the course, the student will be able to:

-apply thermodynamic equations to materials science problems.

-interpret binary and ternary phase diagrams.

-discuss and solve chemical reaction problems.

-define and solve heat transport and mass transport problems.
