Design of Energy Efficient Buildings D
Aalto University

This course deals with the tools, methodologies, and processes required for designing, building and operating sustainable buildings, as well as for evaluating their energy efficiency and environmental performance in various stages of their operation and life. The course is intended to cover the followings subjects: the design process, generic design strategies for low-carbon buildings, energy efficient HVAC-systems, low energy approaches for thermal control of buildings, energy efficient electrical systems, controls and metering, electric power load assessment, energy modelling, indoor conditions and energy.

This is a research-oriented course: heat transfer as well as building design fundamentals are assumed to be already known. The students will engage in reading specific journal articles, solving some energy balance calculations, participating in group work aimed at writing conference papers. They will also perform individual computer simulations of energy efficiency.

Content:

- Introduction to Load Calculations

- Load and annual energy calculations

- Thermal comfort and radiation

- Principles of NZEB design

- Technical solutions for energy efficient buildings

- EPC and Energy policy, Exergy

A comprehensive training of a software for building energy modeling (IDA-ICE) is an important part of the course.

Study load:

Contact teaching = 27h (6×2h+5×3h)

Weekly Assignments = 24h (8×3h)

Student group seminar = 27h (group work + student seminar + report preparation)

Simulation software = 44h (3×3h tutoring sessions + 35h simulation project)

Learning diary blog = 10h (5×2h)

Additional reading = 3h

Total: 135h.
