Design Process Management D

Aalto University

On this multidisciplinary course, students learn to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams. The teams are led by project manager who uses advanced processes and methods related to building design process management in construction projects. The focus is on managing and coordinating interdisciplinary building project teams throughout the different design stages to ensure that design solutions are fit for purpose and comply with design requirements. Design requirements include sustainability goals, related to e.g. CO2 emissions during construction and use phase, and designing for constructability so that the building can be constructed in minimum time, minimizing carbon emissions during construction phase. The course is based on a large, multidisciplinary project assignment. Each student will have a role and project tasks. Mentors include project and design managers of the real case projects, familiar with the Owner's requirements in each case, to help steer the groups in the right direction during weekly meetings. Additionally, there is a pool of mentors from the industry (designers and builders) who can review any discipline-specific questions.

It is important to emphasize that the learning differs depending on the role in the team. Project manager and lead designer roles will learn most about design process management (focus on learning objectives 1,2,3,5). Other team members learn more about discipline-based skills applied in a real project environment, Building Information Modeling and collaboration with other disciplines (learning objectives 3,4,5). On this kind of project course, learning is heavily dependent on effort and it will be minimal if there is no attempt to understand other related disciplines.
